A striking photograph capturing two startled military horses galloping through central London has been selected as one of the top contenders for the prestigious IMAGO Photograph of the Year. This image is among 15 that have been shortlisted by a panel of judges for the annual UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards, where the winner will ultimately be determined by public vote.

Among the other notable photographs vying for the award is a heartwarming image of the Princess of Wales, dressed in green, as she smiles at Sandringham on Christmas Day. The shortlist also includes a provocative moment of political protest, featuring Reform UK leader Nigel Farage having a milkshake thrown at him, alongside a photo depicting a dinghy filled with migrants attempting to cross the English Channel. Additionally, there is imagery of rioters attacking a hotel that houses asylum seekers.

The selection extends to sports and military recognitions, with a photograph of tennis star Novak Djokovic celebrated under the bright sun on Wimbledon Centre Court, and a poignant flypast of the Red Arrows commemorating the anniversary of D-Day. The shortlist additionally honours the late rugby league legend Rob Burrow with a touching final portrait, following his passing in June.

Jason Green, the picture editor for the Daily and Sunday Telegraph who chaired the judging panel, remarked on the significance of the chosen images: “This year’s image selection showcases the diverse talents of UK photographers and highlights the vital role photojournalism plays across our entire industry.”

Last year, nearly 9,000 individuals from the UK, the US, Europe, and Australia participated in the voting process, underscoring the broad interest in photographic art. Voting for this year’s award will be open until noon on March 12, and the results, revealing the winning photographer, will be announced on April 1.
