Young carers and their families in Leeds and Rotherham have experienced a summer filled with meaningful activities designed to provide respite, foster connections, and celebrate the vital yet often overlooked role they fulfil. This was made possible through Family Action’s Summer Fund, an initiative aimed at supporting families dealing with financial hardship, health challenges, or caring responsibilities by bringing them together in community-centred settings.

In July, one of the highlights was an outdoor event where families engaged in bushcraft and den-building activities. Young carers were encouraged to explore nature and build resilience, while their parents took part in creative workshops that offered therapeutic benefits and the opportunity to bond with others facing similar challenges. The event provided a rare chance for families to relax, recharge, and reflect on their unique experiences. Speaking about the event, one young carer said: “It’s been the best day ever and having my mum being able to be part of the day too felt really special as it’s not something we would usually do as a family.” Another shared the value of the social support: “Meeting other young carers has made me realise I am not the only one and I have never met such a welcoming group of people.”

Councillor Fiona Hayden, Executive Member for Children and Families in Leeds, attended the occasion to show local government support and meet with families and organisers. Sophie Parker, Service Manager for Family Action Leeds and Rotherham, emphasised that the summer’s focus was on offering young carers and their families space to breathe and be celebrated, highlighting how the blend of outdoor activities and creative workshops helped foster joy, resilience, and community spirit.

The summer programme also included an exhilarating experience at Sherburn Aero Club on 20 August, where young carers from the region enjoyed helicopter flights as part of a national initiative led by the Honourable Company of Air Pilots (HCAP). This scheme has flown over 100 young carers across the UK, aiming to share the joy of flying with these deserving young people. Alasdair Beaton of HCAP explained that the organisation seeks to recognise the often unseen contributions of young carers within their families and to provide them with a joyful break from their responsibilities. Dave Salt, Airfield Line Supervisor, reflected on the rewarding experience of seeing the children’s enthusiasm and smiles as they took to the skies.

The summer’s activities culminated on 27 August with a visit to Lineham Farm, featuring outdoor events organised by Family Action Leeds Young Carers Support Service. Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon attended, expressing his admiration for the young carers’ responsibilities, which he noted would challenge many adults. He stressed the importance of proper support and opportunities for young carers to enjoy their youth and commended the impact of Family Action’s work in this area.

Beyond these specific events, Family Action’s broader “Make Happy Memories” campaign has aimed nationally to help families create cherished moments through activities and outings. For example, earlier in the summer, the Leeds Young Carers Support Service organised a day trip to Skelton Grange for a group of young carers. These excursions provide invaluable opportunities for these young individuals to step away from their everyday challenges and build lasting positive memories.

Family Action’s initiatives underscore the critical need to support young carers, who often bear substantial responsibilities while also managing their own personal development. By facilitating experiences ranging from creative workshops to adventurous flights, the charity not only illuminates the contributions of young carers but also actively works to enhance their well-being and resilience, encouraging a stronger sense of community and recognition across Yorkshire and beyond.
