The Tasmania Devils, the newest AFL team, has seen a remarkable surge in popularity, with their foundation memberships soaring to over 120,000 within just a few days of being available. According to Kath McCann, the executive director of the team, the significant number of memberships predominantly from Tasmanian residents has been both surprising and deeply gratifying, underscoring the state’s fervent support for Australian Rules football. AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon also noted the strong local enthusiasm as a testament to Tasmania’s rich football heritage.

The club’s impressive membership sales have underscored the potential demand for a proposed new stadium at Macquarie Point, which could seat 23,000 spectators. However, the stadium’s construction has emerged as a contentious topic in the Tasmanian state election, with the AFL emphasising its importance for the Devils’ inclusion in the competition.

Foundation members, in return for a $10 fee, are being offered various perks including membership cards, prior access to team merchandise, and the opportunity to have their names displayed at the team’s headquarters. Additionally, the club has announced plans to unveil several designs for their playing kit, starting with a traditional green strip. The Tasmania Devils have also garnered support from beyond the state, highlighted by encouragement from Jim Cummings, the voice actor for the animated Tasmanian Devil, who expressed his backing for the team online.
