A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by police in Willetton, Perth, after he allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old man in a car park. The incident, which took place recently, is being investigated for potential links to terrorism. The Western Australia Police Commissioner, Col Blanch, noted the incident had the “hallarks” of a terrorism event, although it was not officially labeled as such. Premier Roger Cook suggested the teenager might have been radicalised online.

The stabbing victim is currently in serious but stable condition in the hospital. According to the police, they were alerted by a call about the teenager’s violent intentions, leading them to the scene where they encountered him armed with a large knife. Despite being commanded to drop the weapon, the teenager reportedly charged at the officers, who then fatally shot him.

The deceased was previously known to police and had been involved in a countering violent extremism program since he was 13. This program, supported by psychologists and faith leaders, aims to prevent violent extremism. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Cook have both commented on the incident, expressing sympathy for those affected and commending the police for their prompt action in ensuring public safety.
