On April 16, 2024, a violent incident at the Christ Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, Sydney, was declared a terrorist attack by Australian authorities. During a church service, a 16-year-old boy stabbed multiple individuals, including Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and a priest. Both victims required surgery following the attack. The assailant, who was not previously on any terror watch lists, made statements of religious extremism before the attack.

The incident was livestreamed and led to significant unrest in the area, with clashes occurring between law enforcement and the bishop’s congregation outside the church. These confrontations resulted in injuries to police officers and damage to police vehicles and adjacent homes.

In response, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb have strongly condemned the act of violence. Authorities have established two task forces to investigate not only the stabbing but also the subsequent rioting. The investigation will examine the premeditation aspects of the attack and assess ongoing security threats.

Community leaders and officials, including Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw, have called for peace and unity, advising against any form of retaliation. Meanwhile, the local Assyrian community and the wider public have been urged to remain calm as the situation continues to be closely monitored.
