Three surfers tragically lost their lives in a robbery gone wrong in Baja California, Mexico. The primary suspect has confessed, and the local community calls for increased safety measures.
On April 27, near Ensenada, Baja California, three surfers, Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and American Jack Carter Rhoad, disappeared. Their bodies, along with one unrelated to the case, were later found in a remote cliffside well. The primary suspect, Jesus Gerardo, nicknamed ‘El Kekas’, reportedly confessed to the killings, stating he had “f* up three gringos.” He relayed this information to his girlfriend, who has been detained and named as a witness.
Jesus Gerardo is currently facing kidnapping charges and is expected to be charged with murder. Prosecutors believe the motive involved attempting to rob the surfers of their vehicle’s tires, cash, and electronics, which led to a fatal confrontation. Two additional suspects, Ari Gisell and Cristian Alejandro Garcia, have also been detained on related murder and drug charges.
The incident has prompted a significant reaction from the local surfing community in Baja California, which, despite its popularity for surfing, occasionally experiences violence due to local drug gang activities. The community is advocating for enhanced safety measures to protect tourists visiting the area. The parents of the Robinson brothers have traveled from Perth, Australia, to Mexico to identify and recover their sons, amidst a period of mourning and tributes that recall the brothers’ adventurous spirits and passion for surfing.
