Conservative MP Mark Menzies has been suspended from the Tory party amid serious allegations of misusing campaign funds. Reports from The Times describe that Menzies is accused of transferring £14,000 from campaign donations to his personal account for private expenses, including medical bills. These accusations are further complicated by claims that Menzies made a late-night call to a former aide, urgently requesting £5,000, which he stated was for a “life and death” situation involving a release from individuals referred to as “bad people”.

The Fylde MP, who has served since 2010 and is also a trade envoy to several South American countries, denies all allegations and maintains that he has complied with all necessary declaration rules. Despite his denial, he has relinquished the Conservative whip while the investigation proceeds, leaving him to sit as an Independent MP.

The Conservative Party, having confirmed the launch of an inquiry into these claims, has faced criticism for the perceived delay in responding to the allegations, with liberal Democrat Daisy Cooper highlighting concerns about MPs’ vulnerability to external pressures.

Moving forward, the investigation’s outcomes could significantly impact Menzies’ political career, with potential consequences including a challenging by-election for his seat if the allegations lead to further disciplinary actions or his resignation.
