After enjoying the warmest day of the year with temperatures peaking at 21.8C in Writtle, Essex, the UK is now facing a dramatic drop in temperatures, forecasted to reach as low as -2C in some regions. The Met Office has issued a warning that this sudden change could herald a return of winter-like conditions including snowfalls and wintry showers, affecting particularly Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the north of England.

Meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer highlighted that Sunday will begin with chilly temperatures, which are set to persist and even further decrease throughout the week. While the south-east may experience highs of around 14-15C, northern areas might only see temperatures ranging from 10C to 12C. The colder weather will bring snow showers to higher areas and possible hail and thunderstorms in Wales and northern England.

The drop in temperature is part of a larger weather pattern involving lower pressure moving southwards and bringing colder north-westerly winds across the country. This change follows a brief spell of sunny weather, marking a drastic shift from the recent warmth to much cooler, typical British weather conditions as the working week begins.
