A cross-party committee advocates for a more cohesive strategy to address misinformation on social media, targeting youth demographics and involving trusted public figures to bolster credibility.
A cross-party committee in the UK has called for the government to develop a strategic approach to combat misinformation on platforms like TikTok, particularly targeting young audiences. According to data cited during a parliamentary inquiry, one in ten individuals aged between 12 and 15 view TikTok as their main news source, with the figure rising to 71% of 16 to 24-year-olds who prefer social media over traditional news sources.
The committee’s recommendations include engaging “trusted voices,” such as scientists and doctors, to counteract conspiracy theories and misinformation prevalent on these platforms. Highlighted during the discussions were suggestions to involve public health figures like Sir Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance in these efforts. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee emphasized the urgency of adapting communication strategies to connect with younger demographics through often-used platforms.
Experts, including BBC’s disinformation editor Rebecca Skippage and consumer champion Martin Lewis, informed the committee of the importance of traditional media’s presence on social networks to effectively dispel false information.
Despite TikTok’s popularity among young users, it has raised concerns regarding security issues, leading to restrictions on its use on official government devices. Nonetheless, figures such as Defence Secretary Grant Shapps have adopted the platform, underscoring a divided stance within the government regarding engagement with social media.
In response to these concerns, a TikTok spokesperson assured that the platform actively removes harmful misinformation, promotes media literacy, and encourages public figures to utilize their service for community engagement. Additionally, the upcoming Online Safety Act was discussed as a key legislative measure to compel social media platforms to eliminate illegal content and battle misinformation efficiently.
The call to action follows an increasing acknowledgement of the importance of establishing a clear and effective communication strategy to address misinformation and build trust among the younger public through their preferred digital spaces.
