The aid includes long-range missiles, armoured vehicles, ammunition, air defence systems, UK-procured drones, and support for defence supply chains. This commitment aims to intensify security support for Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledges it as the largest defence support from the UK, crucial in combating the escalated Russian military actions. The UK’s assistance package intends to consolidate defence capabilities and push the total military aid to Kyiv to £3 billion for the fiscal year 2024/25.
Subsequently, PM Sunak has focused on reinforcing the alliance with NATO members through discussions centered on security, trade, and military cooperation. As part of this strategy, the UK plans to deploy an RAF Typhoon squadron for NATO air policing over Poland. This move aligns with Sunak’s agenda to support European allies and strengthen their collective security against potential threats from Russian advancements.
The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia remains severe, with recent Russian missile strikes targeting infrastructures such as the television tower in Kharkiv. Continual support from Western allies remains critical for Ukraine, which is evident as the US Senate is poised to approve $61 billion in war aid. However, there is notable reluctance from the European Union in providing the urgently requested Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine.
