The US government has unveiled a $101 million initiative aimed at controlling a bird flu outbreak that has affected dairy farms in nine states. The outbreak has impacted over 40 herds, triggering measures to enhance testing, treatment, and biosecurity on affected farms. Additionally, financial assistance is being offered to dairy farmers experiencing drops in milk production due to the contagion. The strategy is designed to foster greater cooperation among dairy farmers, many of whom have been hesitant to participate due to business concerns and farm worker reluctance. Despite the virus being reported in a worker on a Texas dairy farm, health officials maintain that the risk to public health is minimal, emphasizing that the virus is neutralized during milk pasteurization. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack confirmed that the outbreak remains confined to the initially impacted states, aiming to keep it contained and manage its spread effectively.
