In Newtownards, County Down, a dog described as an “XL Bully type” was shot dead by police on the evening of Thursday, April 3rd, following an incident in which it reportedly attacked a man and a woman. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers were deployed to the scene in the Rathmullan Drive area shortly after receiving reports of the attack.

Upon arrival, emergency services provided first aid to the injured individuals before transporting them to hospital for further treatment. Several police units were dispatched, including the PSNI dog unit, to manage the situation. Due to the potential risk the dog posed to the public, it was “destroyed” by specially trained officers. Footage reviewed by Belfast Live depicted armed officers approaching the passageway of a property where the incident unfolded, discharging a shot as the dog reportedly reared up on its hind legs, while also employing a spray.

In light of the circumstances surrounding the incident, a large police presence cordoned off the area. DUP councillor Stephen McIlveen addressed the incident, expressing concern for the victims’ well-being while acknowledging the serious nature of the situation. He said, “I’m hoping that no one is seriously injured. It’s terribly sad that an animal has been killed in this way, but a heavily populated area where there are young children is not a suitable place for dogs such as these that are known to pose such a risk.”

This incident occurs within the context of a wider regulation concerning XL Bully dogs, which were banned in several parts of the UK, a measure that was extended to Northern Ireland at the beginning of this year. It is now illegal to own this breed without an exemption certificate, and such certificates require that the dogs be microchipped, licensed, and possess third-party insurance. Additionally, neutering is mandated as part of the exemption conditions.

The PSNI has confirmed the incident has been reported to the office of the Police Ombudsman, following standard procedure for incidents involving police action.
