Labour is set to initiate an advertising campaign in Australia aimed at encouraging parents to better understand the misogyny their children might encounter online. This campaign is a component of a larger initiative focused on addressing men’s violence against women and is particularly concerned with the role of online influencers who perpetuate negative gender stereotypes and condone violence against women.

Concerns have been voiced by experts regarding the role of social media algorithms in directing young men towards violent content. The campaign is geared towards combating misogynistic content in the digital realm and will be inclusive of diverse communities.

Additionally, the Australian government plans to update the Respect.gov.au website. As part of the update, a new feature named the “algorithm of disrespect” will be introduced to simulate the typical social media feed of young Australians, as explained by the Communications Minister. This simulation aims to highlight the prevalence of negative content and the importance of providing more positive alternatives.

This initiative aligns with Labour’s broader commitment to tackling violence against women, emphasizing the critical role of parental involvement and the promotion of positive discussions within families to ensure a safer online environment for children.
