North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, recently engaged in a training exercise to operate newly developed battle tanks, as state media reported. These drills, showcasing the use of a “new-type main battle tank” hailed by Kim as “the world’s most powerful,” aimed at assessing the combat capabilities of the country’s tank forces. Kim personally took the helm of one of these tanks, an act intended to uplift the morale of his troops. According to reports, the training falls around the time of the annual South Korean-U.S. military exercises, which North Korea views as provocations. In response, Pyongyang has vowed to conduct what it calls “responsible military activities.”
This military demonstration occurs amidst escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula, driven in part by North Korea’s increased weapons testing activities that began in 2022.
