A severe incident occurred outside The Cotswold Inn in Cheltenham town centre following the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday evening. A racegoer suffered a brain bleed and was rendered unconscious in a suspected assault. Security personnel at the scene promptly provided aid to the victim, who was then transported to Southmead Hospital in Bristol for treatment.
In connection with the attack, Gloucestershire Police arrested a 28-year-old man from Telford on suspicion of assault, believed to have been a one-punch assault. This arrest was one of four made on the festival’s opening day, with the others related to disorder at the racecourse itself. However, no incidents were reported during the festival’s second day, labelled Style Wednesday.
The pub’s landlady, Natasha Kemili, recounted the immediate aftermath of the assault, noting the dispersal of the crowd as the injured man lay on the ground. Despite this incident, local authorities assured the public of the Cheltenham Festival’s safety, highlighting the heavy police presence designed to handle such events promptly. They also noted their appreciation for the assistance provided by bar staff during the incident.
