A top US official has warned that the control of nuclear weapons by artificial intelligence (AI) in Russia and China could potentially trigger World War 3. Emphasizing the need for maintaining human oversight, the US, UK, and France have made commitments in this regard and are urging Moscow and Beijing to do the same. This issue was highlighted during a conference in Vienna attended by officials from over 100 countries, where the need for international regulations to keep decision-making on life-and-death matters in human hands was underscored.

Meanwhile, the US and China are discussing nuclear weapons policies and AI issues, with China showing interest in a “no first use” treaty even as it increases its nuclear capabilities. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogues with China to prevent misunderstandings.

In a separate context, French President Emmanuel Macron recognized the limitations of the European Union in addressing threats from Russia and underscored the importance of involving non-EU countries like the UK in forming a collective European security strategy. This comes amid persistent tensions with Russia, especially relating to conflicts in Ukraine.

Further complicating matters, US intelligence has reported that Russian military measures in Ukraine have significantly reduced options for ending the conflict, suggesting an ongoing and intense military engagement. Russia’s continued assaults, including attacks on cities like Odesa, are causing significant civilian casualties and fears of prolonged instability in Eastern Europe.

Collectively, these developments reflect growing global tensions related to military tactics, nuclear policies, and the integration of AI in warfare, urging cooperation and responsible governance on the international stage.
