In the past year, reports and inspections have unveiled serious concerns within several UK prisons, spanning from Gloucestershire to Greater Manchester, shedding light on issues ranging from violence to the mental health of inmates.

At HMP Eastwood, Gloucestershire, a report by the Independent Monitoring Board revealed over 500 instances where force was used against female inmates last year, a figure described as “very high” compared to other women’s prisons. The report also noted a 128% increase in self-harm incidents and 91 assaults on staff from January to September 2023. The rise in self-harm was attributed to a small number of women. Responding to these findings, Sonya Ruparel, CEO of the Women in Prison charity, called for better treatment options for mentally unwell women.

Feltham prison has encountered a climate of fear among inmates due to gang violence, leading many to avoid educational classes and workshops. The Independent Monitoring Board detailed group attacks, assaults on staff, and an alarming incident where one child assaulted 38 staff members over seven months. Concerns were also raised about safety in classes and the prisons’ ability to deliver rehabilitation programs, amidst staff shortages and overcrowding.

HMP Hindley, near Wigan, is facing a significant drug crisis and high levels of violence, an inspection by HM Inspectorate of Prisons found. Over half of the prison’s inmates tested positive for drug use during mandatory tests. The presence of illegal drugs was linked to the high rate of violence, along with poor infrastructure, insufficient experienced staff, and a need for more meaningful activities for inmates. Chief Inspector Charlie Taylor highlighted the staff’s determination to tackle these issues, yet emphasized the necessity for urgent investment and strategic changes to improve conditions.

These reports collectively highlight systemic challenges within the UK prison system, including overcrowding, safety concerns, and the need for effective rehabilitation and treatment options for inmates, particularly those with mental health issues.
